Still Life Bent Objects

Posted in Uncategorized on May 4, 2011 by firatgunal

For our photography class I’ve been looking for ideas to use in a stop-motion movie. I’ve done some research for props to use and come along these bent objects. Wires transform these objects from inanimate to hilarious works of art. Using this method, I will easily give life to characters that I will create.

Illustrations and Papercut by Bomboland

Bomboland is a studio working on illustrations and papercut works. I love this kind of stuff. The work has very much depth. The best part is that the illustrations among these are so real that I can’t tell with certainty which are illustration and which are papercut. Especially the poster design with violins is very inspiring.

Shocking Advertisements

Sometimes companies and organizations takes innovative approach even though they push the boundaries. This way they convey the message by disturbing the audience. These campaigns have always been against violance, smoking, alcohol and human rights violations. Most triggering ones are about nature preservation, some of them become very creepy, but they serve their purpose well.

Grid For Editorial Design

Posted in Uncategorized on April 5, 2011 by firatgunal

I tried to build two different grid systems for the editorial design I’m working on. First one is based on 3 text columns. Everyting in the design is based on multiplies of 0.25 cm. First of all, the margins from the left and right side of the paper are 1.5 cm because I want my page to look more compact. I tried smaller margins, but that way the elements in the page looked very close to the sides of the page. Every text column in my page will be 5.5 cm and the space between the columns as you see with black borders will be 0.75 cm.

After building a 3 column page structure, I thought of designing a 4 column structure with close values to my first grid. This time the problem wasto create a big enough columns for the text. So I narrowed the margins from the side to 1.15 cm. This automatically gave me more space for the text. Every Column in this structure is 4.5 cm and the space between them is 0.25 cm.

Editorial Design and Grid

Gestalt principles were the first design information they thought us at Sabanci University at the introductory course for design students. Almost for a semester, we had to study the principles that are developed by German psychologists Gestalt principles or sometimes refered as Gestalt laws in visual world means an order in visual elements.

Visual design has different aspects that seperates it from pure art. You can quantify visual variables with their color, shape, position and size.

There are many principles in Gestalt theory like proximity principle, similarity principle, continuity principle and closure principle, but the ones that are most important for our editorial design work are the alignment and grouping principles. In order to create a good and whole system, there has to be a careful practice of Gestalt principles.

According to Gestalt theory, when you look at a page, you don’t recognize seperate parts of the page layout, instead you perceive the page as a whole. In editorial design, there are almost infinite cases that a designer might face. In order to create a unified system for different cases, you have to operate on a grid system. Grid is very useful for planing the layout and alignment of a page, and it also makes it easier . When you work with a grid you can create systematic rules for alignment and create different rhytms in order to increase the pleasure of the viewer and create a comfortable enviroment for their eyes.  Moreover, you can create your priorities and clusters for your contents.

Bus Stop Advertisements

I think bus stops are really effective for promoting a product or service. Sometimes people have to wait up to 20-30 minutes for a bus. Other than these people, drivers and every passenger on that bus sees these ads. Also the ads that I share makes you look at them twice. There is only one problem that seems important to me as we live in a city that many people like to vandalise these kinds of installations. I wouldn’t get shocked if someone stole the sofa on IKEA installation.
